CHASE AT THE 2007 PCA TRIALS
Author: Irma Shanahan
Chase was one of five partis entered this
year.
On Monday, there was an adorable parti Toy in the agility trial who
ran the course with speed and precision – a veritable blur of black
and white fluff as she flew through the course. I had a chance to
speak to the owner but, unfortunately, cannot remember her name. She
and the Toy were tremendous!
In the obedience trails on Tuesday, the Pre-Novice class was graced
by a parti Toy named Doc (Poco A Poco Doctor No) owned by Maggie
Pierce. Maggie, as many of you will remember, was the owner of Sadie
who was the first and only parti Miniature Poodle to earn an OTCH
(Obedience Title Champion) title.
Chase was entered in the Novice B class along with two other parti
Standards: Jaeger (A Parti at Kaylens of Nathalies Pride CD) owned
by Kay Palades Peiser and a littermate, Beethoven (Let’s Parti of
Nathalie’s Pride) owned by Virginia Dorris.

All of us were pleased that all three partis
qualified for a leg with scores ranging from 191 to 194. In
obedience, a perfect score is 200 and qualifying requires a 170
score, so we all felt that the partis had performed extremely well.
Competition was very stiff. High in Trial came out of our class with
a 199.
Later that day, I showed Chase in the Graduate Novice class where we
were pleased to take first place.
On Wednesday, Chase was entered in the Parade of Champions and AKC
Obedience, Tracking, Rally, Hunting, and Agility Titleholders. Kay’s
Jaeger was also entered. It was at this time PCA decided to announce
that partis would no longer be permitted to be in future Parades.
The announcement was a surprise, but we were already in the line-up
to go into the ring. When we went in, we were given a very warm and
encouraging reception from other attendees at the trial which helped
a great deal to makeup for the disappointment I had felt a few
moments earlier.
Fortunately, many people made their feelings known about banning a
performance Poodle from the Parade because of color, so PCA revised
their stand on this matter. Future regionals and nationals will have
separate Parades for performance events and conformation events, and
partis and mismarks will be permitted in any Parade for which they
have received an AKC title.
PCA is to be congratulated for rethinking their decision and having
the courage to revise it.
All in all, we had a great time. We were there from Sunday afternoon
through Thursday morning. I found that those who were not interested
in partis simply ignored our presence, and those who were either
curious or interested, came over to talk to us. We were treated
graciously by everyone – and many who had not seen a parti before
were pleasantly surprised by Chase. Chase, who absolutely loves
people, thought PCA was Heaven because every time he came out of the
crate, there were people around who would pet him and give him
treats.
Another great thing happened to us at PCA. We had scheduled a time
to have Chase checked for ASD (Atrial Septic Defect) at the clinic
that Texas A&M was holding, and he was clear. This was the final
testing done on Chase, and he was awarded a CHIC number. The Canine
Health Information Center is a centralized canine health database
jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and
the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Their mission is to
provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and
scientists that will assist in breeding healthy dogs. The fact that
Chase merited a number from this organization says volumes about the
quality of his breeding.
