Due to personal difficulties, Clay and Tabitha Balof of Balof’s K9 Academy will no longer be available to answer training questions for Gazette readers.  Tabitha’s series of articles about Chebar, the parti Standard Poodle in training as a narcotics detection dog, may possibly be resumed at a later date.  We wish the Balofs the very best outcome in the challenges they face.

Congratulations,
Lynn Franklin & Joan Rose!

Lynn Franklin and her Standard Poodle Sam were featured in the April 2007 edition of the Canadian Reader's Digest magazine. Lynn and Sam have both appeared in the Gazette: When Poodles are Heroes (December 2006) and Partners in Dance (April 2007). In Reader's Digest, they were featured in an article about dancing with your dog.

The reporter attended a freestyle workshop that Lynn, Sam, and their pairs partners Joan Rose and longhaired Dachshund Tucker (also seen in the Gazette) attended. In the article, the reporter described the two instructors -- Diane Kowalski of the United States and Donelda Guy of the United Kingdom – working with the participants.

“I was so surprised that the four of us were the ones selected to be featured in the article,” Lynn said. “There were so many other people attending that the reporter had lots of people to choose from.”

The article opened with Donelda working with Lynn, Joan, Sam, and Tucker on a new doubles routine, quoting Donelda as saying it was one of the best routines she had ever seen. The article went on to describe some of the workshop sessions.

Sam upheld the reputation of Poodles everywhere when Donelda decided to test his attention span. While Lynn cued him to watch her face and not look around, Donelda tossed toys and food around him. The article describes how one toy practically landed in Sam’s lap, but Sam never looked away from Lynn.

The article might be picked up by the U.S. and U.K. editions, but as of press time, we had no information on that.
